Material qualities at a glance

sub-eutectic and near-eutectic cast steel

In the pearlitic to bainitic matrix, finely distributed carbides are embedded depending on the carbon content. Products from this materials group are always quenched and tempered and offer high strength and fire crack resistance.

Hypereutectic cast steel

Pearlitic matrix with a more or less pronounced carbide network and finely distributed carbides depending on the carbon content. These materials offer high resistance to wear and good grip if free graphite is present. Products from this materials group are always quenched and tempered.

Pearlitic spheroidal graphite cast iron

Pearlitic matrix in which, from the outside to the inside, a decreasing number of carbides in a ledeburitic arrangement and an increasing number of graphite nodules are embedded. Resistance to wear increases with increasing hardness.

Acicular spheroidal graphite cast iron

Bainitic matrix in which, from the outside to the inside, a decreasing number of carbides in a ledeburitic arrangement and an increasing number of graphite nodules are embedded. In addition to the carbides, the matrix – which is formed bainitically due to the alloying process – acts as a second wear-reducing factor.

Chilled cast iron with graphite-free working layer

The ledeburitic working layer contains pearlite and carbide. Towards the interior of the piston, the carbide is replaced more and more with free graphite, as a result of which the core of the piston contains no carbide.
